Is Amazon coming up with a smartphone?

There are several rumors circulating that Amazon is developing their own smartphone. The plan is to run the Google Android OS. I'm guessing that the Amazon smartphone will run a limited version of Android (similar to the Amazon Kindle Fire).

Does Amazon have the right type of ecosystem? I think they could put some serious pressure on Apple. I mainly use the Amazon Kindle app and I like how I can synchronize all my books across my Android and iOS mobile devices.

So, how will the Amazon smartphone be different from other Google Android smartphones? For one thing, the Amazon Appstore provides nice features for devoted Amazon customers. Did you notice how they give away a free paid app each day?

Get the Kindle on your Android smartphone

Who needs to buy an actual Kindle if you can load the Kindle reader app on your smartphone? The popular Kindle app is now available for smartphones running Google Android. Scan the QR Code on the right to get the Kindle app on your Android smartphone. It's free and it's a great reader app.

Kindle is also available for the Apple iPhone, the iPod touch, and yes - even the iPad.

So, if you want to do some reading at the beach this summer, just bring your smartphone. You'll have it with you anyways, and now you can read on your device. If you're a medical student, maybe you'll be reading your medical textbook on your smartphone while you're at the beach with your friends and/or family. Physicians who are preparing for board certification exams may also find their noses buried in books and e-readers that contain clinical pearls and board review questions.

Readers Are Devouring Apple Book Apps

On BusinessWeek, there's a story titled, "Readers Are Devouring Apple Book Apps." Demand for digital book applications on Apple devices gives developers and publishers fresh ways to make money—a mixed blessing for Amazon. Do you agree?

How many books have you read on your iPhone or iPod touch? If you already have a smartphone that is capable of being an e-book reader (or e-reader), then why would you go out and invest several hundred dollars for a dedicated e-book reader like the Kindle, Nook, or QUE? Does it really make sense?

With the new Apple iPad on the horizon, the digital book industry may get revolutionized as devices like the iPad offer much more capabilities that extend beyond traditional e-book readers. Having a multimedia interface and Internet access on your iPad could change the way consumers and even health care professionals access both work-related and personal books.

Kindle for BlackBerry

Who needs an Amazon Kindle if you have a BlackBerry? You can now get Kindle for BlackBerry (beta) by visiting: www.amazon.com/kindlebb

Wow, now you can have a color Kindle!

Do you think we'll ever see "iPad for BlackBerry?" How about "iPad for Windows Phone 7 Series?" Of course, the iPad is much more than an e-book reader, so I shouldn't be comparing it to the Kindle, right?
