My Droid X is now running Froyo (Android 2.2)

As reported, Verizon has released the Froyo (Android 2.2) upgrade for the Droid X. It's about time, isn't it?

Those of you who are using the HTC Droid Eris - I'm sorry, but you won't be getting the update to Android 2.2. The Eris is a nice smartphone, but it's just simply too slow to keep up with some of the latest Android features. However, if you're open to installing a custom ROM, I'm sure the folks at XDA-Developers will release a custom ROM for the Eris that will include Froyo.

Tethering with PdaNet today (Android)

I'm traveling, so I'm tethering with PdaNet on my Android smartphone. This little app allows me to get online with my laptop whenever I'm traveling. You don't need to wait for the Android 2.2 (Froyo) update to have the ability to tether with your Android smartphone.

Motorola Droid 2 launching August 12

The Motorola Droid 2 running Android 2.2 (Froyo) will be launching on August 12 on the Verizon Wireless network. I wonder what that will do the price of the original Motorola Droid. Could this be a good time for medical students and residents to upgrade (since you're probably on a limited budget)?

Android 2.2 (Froyo) is fast and includes some great features

The other day, I had the chance to play around with an Android smartphone loaded with Android 2.2 (Froyo). As reported by other bloggers, Android 2.2 is faster, it includes some nice new features (like support for Adobe Flash 10.1) and:

• New Home screen tips widget
• Exchange support
• Portable Wi-Fi hotspot
• Multiple keyboard languages
• Improved browser performance
• faster app switching
• smoother performance on memory-constrained devices
• Voice dialing over Bluetooth
• and more.

So, are you an early adopter? You can search the XDA-Developers forums to see if someone is cooking up an Android 2.2 ROM for your smartphone. Most of the newer Android devices will probably receive the update to Froyo, but if your phone isn't on the list, then maybe it's time to load a custom ROM so that you're not left behind.
