Qualcomm acquires PalmOS from HP

Earlier this week, we heard that Qualcomm acquired PalmOS from HP. I had a Palm Pilot. I still have a few PDAs and smartphones in my personal museum that run various versions of PalmOS. Then, we had WebOS. LG now has WebOS running on some of their television sets.

What will Qualcomm do with all these patents? Perhaps we will see remnants of PalmOS in the next generation of smartwatches sold by Qualcomm. The current Qualcomm Toq smartwatch is a first-generation gadget, but I can see how these smartwatches will eventually incorporate more robust functionality and will need more functional operating systems.

Stay tuned as we learn more about what Qualcomm plans to do.

Wireless mobile monitoring in pediatric asthma

Qualcomm and Rady Children’s Hospital Collaborate on 3G-enabled Monitoring Kit to Help Prevent Serious Asthmatic Attacks in Children

Qualcomm Incorporated, through its Qualcomm Wireless Reach™ initiative, Qualcomm Life, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, and Rady Children’s Hospital, the primary pediatric health provider serving San Diego, Imperial and southern Riverside counties, today announced their collaboration on a 3G-enabled kit for monitoring the activities of asthmatic children. The project features Asthmapolis and Zephyr technologies in order to help reduce costs and improve outcomes and seeks to determine whether asthma-related therapy can be personalized based on a patient’s physiology, reducing serious asthmatic attacks, emergency room visits, hospitalization and associated costs.

Asthma is one of the most common chronic disorders in childhood, affecting an estimated 7.1 million children under 18 years of age.[1] It is the third leading cause of hospitalization among children under 15. The annual direct health care cost of asthma is approximately $50.1 billion. Asthma is also one of the leading causes of school absenteeism.

Industry discussion around mobile health (mHealth) here at #ATA2012

Here at the American Telemedicine Association (ATA) 2012 annual conference, we are seeing a tremendous amount of technology innovation. Today, I attended the Industry Executive Panel 8: mHealth. How does it fit into the current way healthcare is practiced? Participants included: Qualcomm (Don Jones), Nonin, A&D Medical, and Verizon.

The discussion started with the definition of "mHealth" or "mobile health." So many people refer to this as e-health, wireless health, connected health, etc. Not all mobile health is wireless health. Not all wireless health is mobile. So, we're in a transition period where even the basic terminology around mHealth and telemedicine is evolving.

Some of the newer wireless technologies include things like Near Field Communication (NFC): it's very low power consumption, it's inexpensive, and it requires no pairing. As more medical devices and home monitoring devices incorporate wireless communication technologies, we are seeing a revolution in health data transmission over wireless networks.

During the presentation, Don Jones pulled out an AliveCor iPhone ECG. The panelists agreed that the cloud is going to dominate the mHealth space because of the computing processing power that is available through the cloud. The cloud allows clinicians to leverage analytics and data processing.

Don also used ZocDoc as an example of a mobile service that has dramatically improved the workflow for patients. Given that mobile devices include geocentric services (built-in GPS, Wi-Fi triangulation, etc.), these capabilities are enhancing the delivery of health care.

Insurance companies are adopting mHealth technologies as well. Aetna recently purchased iTriage and patients now have access to emergency room wait times at different hospitals. These are some of the services that are designed to improve patient satisfaction scores. The consumerism model is driving much of the innovation that we are seeing in the mHealth industry.

Qualcomm invests in AirStrip Technologies

AirStrip Technologies Announces Investment from Qualcomm

SAN ANTONIO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AirStrip Technologies, Inc. announced that it has received a strategic investment from Qualcomm Incorporated, acting through its Qualcomm Life Fund. Qualcomm invests in emerging technologies and business models that further accelerate the wireless market. Terms of the investment were not disclosed.

First NIH mHealth Summer Institute in 2011

What are you doing this summer? Maybe you could spend it at the first NIH mHealth Summer Institute.

The National Institutes of Health today announced the creation of the first NIH mHealth, or mobile health, Summer Institute. Scheduled for the summer of 2011, this week-long workshop will bring together leaders in mobile health technologies, behavioral science researchers, federal health officials and members of the medical community to provide early career investigators with an opportunity to learn about mHealth research. The Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR), part of NIH, partnered with Qualcomm, a developer of wireless technologies, to cosponsor the course.

Mobile technologies have the potential to transform medical research and enable health care providers to more rapidly and accurately assess biological processes, behavior, attitudes, and the environment. These technologies also allow providers to help patients improve their health in real time—enabling them to personalize health care options and monitor progress.
