mHealth mValue Case Study Submission program #NHITWeek

Share Your Stories of Mobile Health and Health IT Value - The mValue Case Study Submission program, powered by mHIMSS, provides stories of success and lessons learned from implementation and use of mobile health

WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 17, 2013) – Focused on the value of mobile health for improving patient care and outcomes, mHIMSS, the mobile health initiative of HIMSS, will announce its new mValue Case Study Submission program at the mHIMSS Reception held on Sept. 17 during National Health IT Week in Washington, D.C.

As part of the case study program announcement, CHRISTUS Health, a health system based in Irving, Texas and with more than 60 hospitals and long-term care facilities in six US states and six states in Mexico, will preview the first mValue case study, “Improving Health at Home: Remote Patient Monitoring and Chronic Disease,” implemented at CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System in Texarkana, Texas. This example focused on the health system’s success in reducing hospital readmissions through its remote patient monitoring system.

“mHealth is revolutionizing healthcare delivery, and the ability to collect stories of implementation to share lessons learned, which prevents reinventing the wheel. This story from CHRISTUS Health is so beneficial, as it shows that mobile technology is serving as a tool to increase satisfaction among patients and providers, decrease readmissions, decrease costs, and improve health,” said David Collins, senior director, mobile health initiatives, for HIMSS. “We encourage mHealth stakeholders to learn from each other and leverage the HIMSS mHealth Community, as we recognize the importance of showing how mobile technologies are being used, and can be used, to improve patient care and overall patient outcomes.”

Results of the CHRISTUS Health System Case Study: This health system improved the transition from hospital to home and prevented hospital readmissions for those enrolled using the remote patient monitoring system; the following preliminary results show health IT value on satisfaction and savings:
  1. Overall patient satisfaction 4.77 on a 5.00 scale; and
  2. Before enrollment in the RPMS program, the average cost of care was $12,937. After enrollment, the cost plummeted to $1,231.
“We are extremely excited about this program, which helps our patients remain healthy and in their homes,” said Dr. Luke Webster, vice president and chief medical information officer at CHRISTUS Health. “mHealth products like these are important components of how we will partner with patients as health systems take on increasingly more responsibility for keeping people healthy both inside and outside our hospital walls,” he said.

Hands on with the BlackBerry Z10 at HIMSS

At the HIMSS conference this year, I had a chance to get my hands on the new BlackBerry Z10. This smartphone is thin, light, and the new operating system incorporates some novel swiping gestures for navigation. The 4.2" display is very crisp and clear. I was also impressed by the way the BlackBerry 10 operating system separates work from personal data and information. That should make BYOD and mobile device management easier, especially if an IT administrator ever needs to remotely wipe a device and erase all enterprise data.

The BlackBerry Z10 is "coming soon" to AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.

Mobile computing and BYOD is a hot topic here at #HIMSS13

Today, I had the pleasure of participating on a panel discussion about BYOD with Dr. Mark Blatt from Intel and Bruce Michelson from HP. It was a highly interactive discussion where a number of the attendees asked questions and shared their thoughts and observations on this topic. It's clear to me that BYOD is still a controversial, complicated topic and we need more guidance on this topic in the health care environment. Most physicians and nurses do not fully understand the technical implications associated with data encryption, mobile security management, and remote data persistence on mobile devices. They also do not have a technical understanding behind some of the fundamental security issues and features that distinguish business mobile devices from consumer devices.

I believe that BYOD is a phenomenon that is here to stay in health care. We may not like it, but it's almost impossible to eliminate. Physicians and nurses are going to bring their own devices, even if they can't access patient data on them. They will use their smartphones to take pictures of rashes on lesions on patients. They will use their mobile devices to communicate with other clinicians.

CIOs and other health IT executives need to know how they will handle these BYOD challenges. There are some good mobile device management or MDM solutions that can get installed. We're also seeing mobile operating systems evolving to offer features that are designed to address some of these BYOD headaches.

OtterBox rugged iPhone and iPad cases here at the HIMSS conference

Here at HIMSS, you'll find a variety of rugged cases for smartphones and mobile tablets on the exhibit floor. Since these mobile devices are being used so much in the health care setting, it's important to protect them from damage and to have an easy way to sanitize these devices.

OtterBox makes a wide selection of fairly robust cases for the iPhone, the iPad, and most other smartphones and tablets. As I walked through the exhibit hall at the HIMSS conference, I had a chance to play around with some of the newest OtterBox rugged cases including:
  • Armor series
  • Defender series
  • Commuter series

Are you looking for a rugged case for your mobile device? In addition to OtterBox, take a look at the rugged cases made by Griffin, LifeProof, Body Glove, and others.

A portable ECG in every pocket #mHS12

Whether you call the electrocardiogram an EKG or an ECG, you'll be interested to know that earlier today, AliceCor announced that they received FDA 510(k) clearance on its mobile Heart Monitor as well as CE Mark conformity. This clinical-quality, low-cost mobile ECG heart monitor, compatible with the iPhone® 4 and 4S, enables doctors to evaluate patient heart health easily, quickly and remotely. The rhythm strips can be of any duration, and are stored on the iPhone and securely in the cloud for later analysis, sharing and printing through AliveCor’s secure website. The ECG data is sent wirelessly from the Heart Monitor via AliveCor’s low-power, proprietary communication protocol, and requires no pairing between the iPhone and the device.

I've personally had the opportunity to test this device numerous times (both on myself and on others) and I've been impressed by the quality and accuracy of this two-lead device. If you're at the mHealth Summit in DC, you can view this device at the AliveCor booth #501 with QualcommLife.

Verizon executive speaks about the "Keys to Transforming U.S. Health Care System" at #HIMSS11

‘Simple, Common-Sense Approach’ to Data Security and Interoperability Are Key to Transforming U.S. Health Care System, Verizon Executive Says

Dr. Peter Tippett, in Address at HIMSS 2011, Cites Four Areas That Need to Be Addressed to Enhance Care and Control Costs

ORLANDO, Fla. – The lack of common interoperability standards and inconsistent approaches to security, privacy and trust are perpetuating an antiquated U.S. health care delivery system that has been largely unable to benefit from the widespread adoption of IT, according to Verizon’s top security and health care executive.

The executive, Dr. Peter Tippett, vice president of security and industry solutions for Verizon, called for the development of “simple, common-sense approaches to data security and interoperability” to help expand access to quality care, control costs and improve patient outcomes. He spoke Tuesday (Feb. 22) at the Health Information Management Systems Society annual conference.

Less emphasis on smartphones and more focus on slates here at #HIMSS11

I'm currently at HIMSS11. Last year, many companies were showcasing smartphone apps and smartphone solutions for the iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and webOS. This year, there's much more focus on slate devices like the Apple iPad and less emphasis on smartphones. What does this mean about the future of mobile computing? Physicians will continue to use smartphones, but perhaps smartphone utilization will decrease as slate (and other mobile devices) utilization increases.

These are interesting times because there's so much excitement around slate devices. Some of these devices have 7" screens while others have 9" screens. Smartphones are getting larger, so eventually these devices may converge or we'll simply get accustomed to computing on smaller screens.

HIMSS will be very interesting next year given the fact that we'll have so many new mobile devices on the market by the end of 2011. I anticipate even less mention of smartphone solutions next year and greater emphasis around slate devices like the new Apple iPad 2, the BlackBerry PlayBook, the HP TouchPad running webOS, and a variety of slates running Google Android. Wouldn't it be ironic if the smartphone were to evolve backwards and turn into a simpler device?

For now, I will continue to carry my Droid X and iPad everywhere I go.

SURVEILLANCE SOFTWARE

New Solution Can Immediately Identify High-Risk Patients, Equipping
Providers with Critical Information to Improve Patient Outcomes

CSC (NYSE: CSC), a leading global consulting, systems integration and
outsourcing company, today announced that it has selected Corticon
Technologies (www.corticon.com), a leading provider of Business Rules

for its CareVeillance™ real-time clinical surveillance software. CSC will
leverage Corticon’s BRMS to implement the solution, and, going forward,
will collaborate with Corticon to develop new solutions to automate best
practices within the healthcare industry.

As the healthcare industry faces unprecedented change and reform, new
government-mandated quality standards have been introduced and healthcare
providers are being held to these standards, with reduced reimbursement for
those who fail to meet them. According to the government mandate, hospitals
must show that they provided the appropriate care, and avoided patient
complications, before they are reimbursed for treatment. In addition, this
quality information must also be collected and validated by hospitals as
the patient is treated, not after the fact.
