The NIH will host a NIH mHealth Training Institute as a satellite meeting for the mHealth Summit. The mHealth Institute is designed to provide behavioral and social scientists tools to successfully add mobile health technologies to their research in a collaborative team environment with mentorship from leaders in the fields of engineering, medicine and the behavioral and social sciences.
The two-day Institute provides participants with an overview of the central multidisciplinary aspects of mobile and wireless research. The training will follow a project form conception through dissemination led by a panel of experts. Participants will be involved in didactic sessions targeting major cross-cutting research issues and interdisciplinary team exercises developing mHealth research projects.

Texting & health care delivery around the world #mHS12
Today is the 3rd day of the mHealth Summit and today we will hear some sessions around global health. The morning started with Nafis Sadik from the United Nations Foundation speaking about the use of mobile technology in developing countries. In general, more women than men use mobile technology and this presents a huge opportunity to improve care in women's health. Women's health care is significantly lacking in many developing countries. Hence, there are huge problems related to pregnancy, maternal mortality, HIV/AIDS, and abuse. There are also issues surrounding gender equality, family responsibilities, caring for children, and other social matters. The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) include child and maternal health, HIV, gender equality, and poverty/hunger.
Ariel Pablos-Méndez from USAID spoke about the health disparities around the world that are being addressed using mobile technology. Neonatal complications account for 40-50% of deaths in children in many Asian countries. He gave the following points:

text4baby showcased at the #mHS12
Earlier today, Kim Kadlec from Johnson & Johnson spoke about some innovative ways that pharmaceutical companies are using mobile technology to engage patients. One of the initiatives that she described was the text4baby program. Johnson & Johnson is the founding sponsor for text4baby, a mobile health initiative designed to improve clinical outcomes among pregnant women. text4baby launched nationally on February 4, 2010.
The program has four goals:
1. Demonstrate the potential of mobile health technology to address a critical national health priority: maternal and child health.
2. Demonstrate the potential of mobile health technology to reach underserved populations with critical health information.
3. Develop a base of evidence on the efficacy of mobile health interventions.
4. Catalyze new models for public-private partnerships in the area of mobile health.

CHICAGO (February 16, 2012) – The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) announced today that the 2012 mHealth Summit will take place Dec. 3 -5 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Washington D.C. The theme for the fourth annual summit is “Connecting the Mobile Health Ecosystem.” The mHealth Summit, a well-respected international conference, exhibition and networking event, is the largest gathering focused solely on the intersection of health and mobile information technology.
