The market for mHealth services has now entered the commercialization phase and will reach $ 26 billion globally by 2017 says the new “Global Mobile Health Market Report 2013-2017” by research2guidance. Smartphone applications have begun to enable the mHealth industry to successfully monetize their services.

Ralf-Gordon Jahns, Head of Research at research2guidance, points out “Our findings indicate that the long-expected mobile revolution in healthcare is set to happen. Both healthcare providers and consumers are embracing smartphones as a means to improving healthcare.”

Top mHealth publishers manage to generate more than 3 million free and 300.000 paid downloads in the USA on the iOS platform. The reach on other platforms and in other countries differ at lot but show also the increase of business potential for mHealth apps.

Not only are consumers taking advantage of smartphones to manage and improve their own health, but also healthcare professionals. A significant number (15%) of mHealth applications are primarily designed for healthcare professionals. These include CME (Continued Medical Education), remote monitoring and healthcare management applications.

Abstract: A physician's continuing professional development is critical to keeping up with advances in medicine and with changes in the delivery of care. As mobile technology becomes an integral part of the clinical workflow process, physicians are becoming more comfortable using mobile devices to learn and to develop professionally. There are currently a wide variety of mobile platforms that offer continuing medical education activities for physicians. We will examine some of the ways that physicians are currently using mobile technology in formal, continuing medical education settings. We will also see how physicians are responding to medical education activities that are developed to educate physicians about the various ways they can use mobile technology to improve patient care. As physicians apply mobile technology in the clinical setting and learn how they can leverage these resources for professional education and development, we will witness a transformation in the way physicians learn and apply evidence-based information at the point of patient care.

500 Million people will be using mobile health applications in 2015

Smartphone applications will help the mobile health market to break through.

Although the potential benefits of mHealth solutions have been widely discussed for over a decade, the market never emerged from the trial phase. Smartphone applications will enable the mHealth industry to successfully reach out to 500m of a total 1.4bn smartphone users in 2015 the new “Global Mobile Health Market Report 2010-2015” by research2guidance says.

CME on your smartphone

There are several ways to get CME (continuing medical education) credit by using your smartphone.  Several years ago, there were only a handful of options. Today, there are many more ways to get CME on your smartphone.

Here are some examples of medical apps, medical websites, and other smartphone resources that will allow you to participate in CME activities on your smartphone:

This is not a comprehensive list, but you'll see that this list continues to grow each year. They're probably not going to spend a few hours going through a CME activity on a device that has such a small screen, but they'll spend 15 or 30 minutes reviewing something. As smartphone web browsers become more sophisticated and more powerful, we'll be capable of viewing almost any type of web page on a smartphone. This means that you'll get to view any type of online CME on your smartphone.
