Additional medical apps for my wife's new Android smartphone

When my wife (a family physician) received her HTC Droid Incredible last week, I loaded the following medical apps on her Android smartphone:

• Epocrates
• Skyscape
• QuantiaMD

Here are some of the other medical apps I recently installed for my wife:

• QxMD

She may purchase a medical book through Unbound Medicine. She's using UpToDate via the super-fast mobile web browser on her HTC Droid Incredible.   If you haven't tested the web browser on this phone, you have to give it a try. It's phenomenal!

She's still waiting for an Android app from Medscape and ReachMD (so that she can listen to my Mobile Medical Minute on ReachMD).

Is your smartphone drug database up-to-date?

There are several different drug database software solutions out there for PDAs and smartphones. How often do you update your software? The convenience of having a smartphone is that your device can get updated automatically. My smartphone auto-updates and performs a synchronization every night. So, when I wake up the next morning, I have updated information and even a few news alerts.

So, whether you're using Epocrates, Skyscape, Lexi-Comp, PEPID, Unbound Medicine, Medscape, Tarascon, or any other drug reference software, make sure you're updating your database on a regular basis.

I wonder if we'll eventually see a "Medical" category in the Android Marketplace. As you can see from this list, many of these apps really aren't professional medical apps. They're really geared for the consumer. What's also interesting is that I don't see medical apps like Skyscape, Unbound Medicine, Lexi-Comp.

What's your favorite medical app? If you're currently using a smartphone running Android or webOS, then your options are fairly limited. There are still many apps for Windows Mobile and BlackBerry, but sometimes I wonder how these two operating systems will compete against the Apple iPhone and Android.

Drug reference guides for Android

If you're using an Android powered smartphone (such as the Motorola Droid, the HTC Hero, HTC MyTouch, or the HTC Droid Eris), then you may be wondering when Epocrates will release drug reference software for your operating system. You can access drug information via your mobile web browser (m.epocrates.com) or you can purchase drug reference medical apps from Unbound Medicine (such as Drug Facts or Davis's Drug Guide). MobilePDR will also be available for Android in 2010 and I'm sure Epocrates will have some Android software in 2010.

If you have a subscription to UpToDate, remember that you can access that via a mobile web browser and look up drug info (powered by Lexi-Comp). Finally, you may be glad to know that Skyscape now offers an Android Reader for their titles.

Lexi-Comp for the Palm Pre (webOS) - coming soon

If you want to get a preview ("sneek peak") of Lexi-Comp medical and dental software for the Palm Pre running webOS, then take a look at this link: http://www.lexi.com/pda/palm-pre/

The software is still in development, but you can get a sense of how the medical app will run on webOS. They have screen shots and a short video. The software interface reminds me of the iPhone, and I think that's the direction we'll see things move as more smartphones rely on finger-touch input and navigation.
